Man Who Set Himself On Fire Outside Pune Police Commissioner Office, Dies During Treatment

Pune, 19th August 2021: A 42-year-old man who set himself on fire outside the Pune Police Commissioner office on Wednesday allegedly due to harassment, succumbed to burn injuries during treatment at a hospital. His relatives have blamed the police for the incident.

The deceased has been identified as Suresh Vitthal Pingale, a resident of Khadki.

Pingale had come to the Police Commissionerate in Camp around 11.30 am on Wednesday. He had applied for police verification (character certificate) for a job. He was told that the scrutiny of documents was underway. However, he has been making rounds of the local police station and commissioner office for getting the certificate, for several days but in vain.

Pingale poured inflammable liquid on his body and set himself on fire. In a fit of rage, he ran inside the police commissioner’s office. The security personnel at the gate and the crime branch staff doused the fire and rushed him to Sassoon Hospital for treatment.

He was later shifted to a private hospital. The hospital administration had said that Pingale had sustained about 90% burn injuries.

DCP (Zone 2) Sagar Patil said that a thorough investigation is underway in the case.

Police found some documents in his bag. It also contained a suicide note. He wrote about the troubles of the police system as well as the troubles of family and some friends.

Meanwhile, his wife has filed a complaint application with Bundgaarden police station.
