Pune, 10th June 2021: Revenue hearings, which were suspended due to the second wave of Coronavirus disease (COVID19), have been resumed by the District Collector’s Office after a gap of two months. A hearing will be held only after both the plaintiff (complainant) and the defendant (opposite party) make a written request.

Under the Maharashtra Revenue Land Act, land claims and counter-claims are heard in the Collectorate. These hearings are heard by the Additional Collector.

“These hearings were closed since April 1; hence, the citizens faced difficulty in getting their cases resolved. Attempts were made to take these hearings through video conferencing. However, due to technical difficulties and the demand for an actual hearing made by the advocates, the hearing has been resumed,” said Additional District Collector Vijay Singh Deshmukh.

Earlier, 120 hearings were being held daily. However, the number of daily hearings will be lower at present as the infection in rural areas has not yet decreased. Deshmukh also clarified that only the advocates of both parties will be allowed to be present in the hearing room.

The pandemic has led to an increase in the number of revenue lawsuits pending since last year. In some cases, it has been observed that neither the plaintiff nor the defendant has been present for the hearing for many years.

Additional District Collector Deshmukh added that due to the absence of plaintiffs and defendants in many cases, the administration has decided to settle the revenue claims that have been pending for years. Before that, instructions will be given to the concerned and if no response is received from them, such cases will be dropped from the proceedings.
