Pune: Former Justice PB Sawant Passes Away At 91

Pune, February 15, 2021: Former Justice PB Sawant (91) died of old age today at his residence in Baner around 9.30 am. The cremation will be done on Tuesday morning.
As a judge, Sawant had given many historic verdicts. Sawant studied LLB at the University of Mumbai. He worked as a Judge in the Mumbai High Court and the Supreme Court. Sawant was a judge of the Supreme Court from 1989 to 1995.
Even after his retirement, he was active in social programs. He also served for some time as President of the World Press Council and the Press Council of India. He also worked extensively as the founder of the Lokshasan Andolan Party.
The first Elgar Parishad in Pune was held under the chairmanship of Sawant. He was also the chairman of the coordination committee appointed to get a reservation for the Maratha community. However, he later relinquished responsibility due to differences. He was also a member of the three-member tribunal set up in the Godhra riots case.
Former Justice BG Kolse Patil said, “Sawant and I have been friends for 50 years. He was a perfect example of how to be an ideal person in all fields as a judge, lawyer, social worker. The decisions he made on social and economic issues had to be legislated in Parliament.”
Home Minister Anil Deshmukh tweeted, “Pained by the demise of noted former Justice PB Sawant Ji. My thoughts and prayers are with his family and friends in this hour of grief. May the departed soul rest in peace.”
