Jails In Maharashtra A New Tourism Spot?

Pune, January 23, 2021: The State Government has agreed to turn the prisons in the State into tourist centres. Home Minister Anil Deshmukh will inaugurate the central prison at Yerwada, Pune as the first tourist centre on January 26.

 

Various central prisons in the State have had an historical importance. Before Independence Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Independent India’s first Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, Lokmanya Bal Gangadhar Tilak, Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Sarojini Naidu, Veer Savarkar were lodged here.

 

Phase wise, the tourism will be started at Nashik, Thane and Nagpur, said Deshmukh adding that the aim is to pass on the heritage importance of these places to the new generation.

 

Yerwada prison is one of the biggest Central prison in South Asia. There was a proposal for the history students, researchers and historians to get a free tour of the prisons but they will have pay for the ticket according to their age group.

 

The jail will be kept open for the visitors from 12 pm to 3 pm when all the jail inmates are locked in their respective cells
