Pune, January 3, 2021: “The number of prisoners in the state’s prisons has doubled so new and modern prisons will be set up in the future. In this regard, the proposal submitted to Chief Minister Uddhav Thackeray and Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar has been approved. Besides, the issue of police houses will also be resolved”, informed Sate Home Minister Anil Deshmukh.

Deshmukh visited Yerawada Central Jail and inspected it. While addressing the media along with Anil Deshmukh, MLA Sunil Tingre, Inspector General of Prisons Sunil Ramanand, Deputy Inspector General Yogesh Desai, Sharad Khatavkar, Superintendent of Yerawada Jail UT Pawar, Deputy Commissioner of Police Pankaj Deshmukh and senior officials of the jail were present.

“The number of prisoners in the state has doubled and the number is increasing day by day. 11,000 prisoners have been released on bail during the Covid-19 period to prevent further spread of coronavirus in prisons. This helped to reduce the crowd in the prison. But there are still overcrowded prisons in the state. Therefore, new prisons will be set up in the future. State-of-the-art prisons have been set up in many parts of the country. On that basis, modern and more capable prisons will be set up in Maharashtra. The Chief Minister and the Deputy Chief Minister have approved the proposal to set up new jails”, said Deshmukh.

Inspection of the hanging yard

During his visit to the jail, Home Minister Anil Deshmukh inspected the Gandhi Yard, the prisoners’ barracks, the kitchen and the factory department. After that, he inspected the hanging yard of the jail and learned about the process there. He interacted with the prisoners of Barracks No. 1 and 2 of the factory department and got to know their problems. Going to the hanging yard, he learned how prisoners are hanged, how the process is carried out, who has been hanged till date.
