Pune, September 8, 2020: For at least five months now, wearing masks have been an essential part of our daily routine. Covering your face or usage of masks is the new mandate within the country and globally as well. Many state governments have imposed penalty now.

In this regard, Pune City Police have been collecting Rs 500 fine from drivers/people who are not wearing masks. However, confusion regarding wearing masks inside the vehicles was being discussed on Twitter.

To clarify the chaos related to this, Punekarnews.in raised the query to the Joint Commissioner of Police Ravindra Shisve. “If a person is driving in a car alone or cycling alone, it is not required to wear a mask”, he confirmed. However, if there is more than one person in the vehicle, it is mandatory to wear a mask, and if not worn, a penalty could be levied.

“Pune Municipal Corporation has given the authority to Pune Police to charge fines, but the aim is not to collect hefty fines, but to ensure that people wear masks so that we can together stop further COVID spread”, added Shisve.

The impact of the previous report published by Punekarnews.in has resulted in Pune police to not fine solo drivers for not wearing masks. Jt CP has issued direction to every police station.

According to the sources, Pune police has given targets to police stations to collect fines, and due to this fines are being collected in huge numbers. “If a target is not given then cops don’t work properly. Therefore, we give them the target of a minimum number of cases they have to do every day”, informed a senior police inspector, in-charge of a police station.
