TREE PLANTATION DRIVE WITH NGO STAMP AT INS SHIVAJI
Lonavala, August 3, 2019 : Personnel of INS Shivaji and NWWA, Station Lonavla, in conjunction with an NGO titled STAMP, headed by Ms.TanishaMukherji, undertook a major tree plantation drive on 02 Aug 19 wherein over 1500 trees/ saplings were planted in the base. The drive was in consonance with green initiatives launched by the Indian Navy, with the aim to enhance the catchment area of Indrayani river through tree plantation.
The establishment, which is located amidst thick forest/ grassland, forms a part of the largest catchment area for the Indrayani River in the region, in addition to having its own captive dam. Saplings of kadamba, karanj, sonchafa, tabubia, parijat and jamun trees were planted on this occasion.
The trees planted will produce oxygen, attract birds and provide a range of other important benefits viz. reducing rainwater run-off, preventing flash floods, soil erosion, air pollution and recharging the aquifers, besides increasing the ground water table in the nearby Kurvande Village from where this river originates.The NGO STAMP coordinated presence of Celebrities like Tanuja, Kajol, Jackie Shroff to participate in the Tree Plantation.
