Workshop on “3D Printing and its Applications”, organized at  Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Engineering (BV(DU)COE)

He expressed his views when speaking at the occasion of inauguration of Workshop on “3D Printing and its Applications”, organized by in Department of Mechanical Engineering, at Bharati Vidyapeeth (Deemed to be University) College of Engineering (BV(DU)COE), Pune.

He commenced saying that modern technology is impacting modern education. Quoting an excerpt “Cinema is a reflection of society and vice versa” from a recent speech of Honorable Prime minister, he said, same wasn’t true in case of education until last 5 years. However in recent five years, education has seen a drastic change wherein technology is continuously facilitating transformation and reshaping human resources and hence education also. This has been the motive for including Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things, 3D printing, Virtual reality and other recent technologies as part of education curriculum. These observations have influenced the selection of topics for the workshops or training programs organized in BV(DU)COE.

Speaking further on the objectives and importance of training programs he said that teachers are responsible for developing ability of students to perform, self improvement and advancement in career. Teachers play a key role in transforming a raw student to a contributory person. Hence it’s an utmost necessity that teachers be trained recurrently to make them competent, confident and knowledgeable persons that they can continuously upgrade their knowledge and hence bring about positive transformation in students, he said. He said that training needs have to be analyzed, as the need for training exists when a teacher lacks in knowledge or skills to perform assignment work satisfactorily. Organizations should first do training need analysis and prioritize the areas of training. Since outcome based education is in practice now, the identified training programs must be mapped with program outcomes and high priority training programs have to be undertaken, he said. Elaborating on how to evaluate training, he mentioned referenced a book by Donald Kirkpatrick and James Kirkpatrick where the authors give a 10 step process for the same viz. determine needs, Setting objective, determining subject content, selecting participants, determining best schedule, selecting appropriate facilities, selecting appropriate trainers, audio-visual aids, coordinating program and evaluating program. It is required that everyone working in an organization should be concerned about his own as well as organization’s credibility.

He further said that employees should feel that “I want to be trusted by my company, I want to be respected by my company, I want to be accepted my company, I want my company and fellow managers to say- “we need you”. When employees feel this way, lots of wonderful things happen in professional as well as personal lives like granting of requests, job stability, improvement in quality of work, heeding to advices, gain control in professional life and sleeping well, reduced worries, happiness in life on the personal front. He concluded his speech by saying that, given these reasons, employees need to be trainable, they should get trained and acquire knowledge and be a contributory person to organization and society.

Mrs. Purva Kulkarni (Director, Geoclid 3D Printing Solutions Pune) shared her views the needs & objectives of 3D printing technologies she said that,’ In recent years, 3D printing has developed enough to perform crucial roles in many applications, with the most important ones being manufacturing, medicine, architecture, custom art and design. Some companies even use 3D printers to create more 3D printers. In the current scenario, 3D printing processes are finally catching up to their full potential, and are currently being used in the manufacturing and medical industries, as well as by sociocultural sectors which facilitate 3D printing to become successful commercial technology she informed. During the workshop she introduced and explained in details about 3D printing technologies such as FDM, Stereolithography (SLA), Selective Laser Sintering (SLS), Digital Light Processing (DLP), Metal 3D Printing and its detailed applications in multidisciplinary area (Medical, Dental, Architecture, Engineering, Food Industries and Fine Arts).
