CREDAI aims to train 1 lac more construction workers in India in 2018

Pune: The Construction industry has been one of the largest contributors to India’s GDP. Despite this, this rapidly growing industry faces a grave challenge of unskilled workforce. India’s formally skilled workforce is approximately 4% – which is dismally low compared to China (47%), UK (68%), Germany (74%), Japan (80%), or South Korea (96%). It is in this background that Skill Development of Construction workers has emerged as an integral part of CREDAI’s priority agenda over the past few years. Deeply committed to addressing skill deficit in the construction industry, Confederation of Real Estate Developers’ Associations of India (CREDAI) has embarked on many initiatives in training the construction workers. CREDAI forayed into Skilling with its training program ‘’Kushal’’ in 2011 through its Pune Chapter in collaboration with NSDC. Since then, CREDAI is conducting regular On-site Training Programs for construction workers at construction sites through its member developers spread across 23 states and 189 city chapters. CREDAI has trained more than 1 lakh construction workers in over 450 construction sites across 55 cities under PMKVY, RPL, Bridge RPL and special projects and has set a benchmark by training 50000 workers in Pune alone.

CREDAI has also started to undertake skilling at source at Off- site centers i.e. at places from where the construction labor is traditionally sourced. The idea is to skill the unemployed youth there and then to tie up with the labour contractors to deploy such workers at CREDAI’s sites so that instead of them coming absolutely raw and learning on the job, they are first formally trained in the trade and then sent to take up job at the site. In this way, we complete the forward and backward linkages and achieve the intent of the Government of India’s skilling initiative, that the industry itself comes forward as a Training Partner and upskill the unemployed youth in such off-site centers set up by CREDAI to fill this gap & then engages them in the industry. More than 3500 workers have been trained in Masonry, Bricklaying, Tiling, Bar Bending, Shuttering Carpentry, Electrical and Plumbing. Once trained, they are facilitated in obtaining employment at various sites at our member developers sites across the country through labour contractors at better wages. CREDAI is also in the process of developing Mobile App in association with CSDCI to Link Off-site Skill Trainings and Placements.

CREDAI National President, Mr. Jaxay Shah, comments “CREDAI has constantly maintained a stance of contributing to the growth of the industry’s stakeholders. Through this initiative, CREDAI has successfully transformed thousands of lives by conducting theoretical and practical training sessions for construction workers in Pune and in other parts of the country. As an industry body, we realize the importance of a skilled workforce towards the development of the industry and the economy which encourages us to enhance the reach of our initiative even further.”
