Viral Video: Woman Confronts Traffic Cops at Pune’s Mundhwa Chowk Over Daily Jams

Mundhwa, 23rd April 2025: Even as Pune Police tout improvements in city traffic flow through a data-driven strategy, ground realities tell a different story for many citizens. Daily commuters from several parts of the city continue to express frustration over persistent traffic snarls and mismanagement, with recent incidents reigniting the debate.
A fresh example emerged from Mundhwa Chowk, where a video of a woman confronting traffic police has now gone viral. The footage, which surfaced earlier this week, captures the woman voicing her frustration over recurring traffic chaos in the area. Her confrontation resonated with thousands across Pune who face similar struggles during their daily commute.
Visibly agitated, the woman is seen questioning traffic personnel, stating, “Closing roads isn’t the same as managing traffic properly.” Though the audio in the video is muffled in parts, her sentiment was loud and clear — she demanded accountability and better planning from the authorities.
In an effort to ease congestion at the heavily trafficked Mundhwa Junction, traffic police recently introduced experimental diversions, including the deactivation of the main traffic signal. However, this move has drawn mixed reactions from locals. Many took to social media, labelling the diversion strategy as “confusing” and “counterproductive.”
While the Pune Police maintain that their initiatives have improved average travel times, incidents like these highlight the gap between administrative claims and the daily experiences of residents. The woman’s video has sparked renewed conversations on platforms like X (formerly Twitter), Facebook, and Instagram, where many Punekars echoed her concerns and called for more practical, people-friendly solutions.
Saurabh Dhumal, a resident from Keshav Nagar, Mundhwa, wrote to the Pune Police Commissioner about the ongoing issues of poor traffic management at Mundhwa Chowk, which has become a serious concern for daily commuters. “The situation has significantly worsened due to unnecessary and poorly planned traffic diversions, leading to long queues, daily congestion, and frequent traffic jams during peak hours.
These diversions appear to be implemented without proper alternate route planning. As a result:
Emergency vehicles struggle to pass through.
Pedestrians are left without safe crossings.
Frustrated commuters are forced to take unsafe or illegal routes to avoid the chaos.
For 2.5 KM road its taking 20 to 25 minutes with huge traffic.(See attached screenshot)
We understand and support the efforts of the traffic department in managing urban traffic, but such diversions without clear planning or communication defeat the purpose and only increase public inconvenience.
I kindly request your urgent intervention in reviewing the current traffic management plan at this location. It would be greatly appreciated if corrective measures could be taken—such as streamlining diversions, deploying additional personnel, or restoring previous routes—after proper on-ground assessment”, Dhumal stated in his email.
