Pune: Major Fire Breaks Out In Chandannagar Slum Area; Over 50 Huts Gutted, No Casualties Reported

Chandannagar, 23rd April 2025: A major fire broke out in the Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Vasahat area of Chandan Nagar, located along Nagar Road, in the early hours of Wednesday (23rd April). Fortunately, no casualties were reported as residents managed to evacuate in time, averting a serious disaster.
The fire, which erupted around 5 am, quickly spread through the densely packed slum inhabited largely by daily wage workers. Upon receiving an alert, the fire control room at the central fire station dispatched 15 fire tenders and water tankers to the site.
Panic gripped the area after at least 10 LPG cylinders exploded during the blaze, intensifying the fire and causing loud blasts that alarmed locals. In total, over 50 huts were completely gutted, and numerous household belongings were destroyed in the flames, officials from the fire department confirmed.
Under the guidance of Fire Station Chief Devendra Potphode, a team of 80 fire personnel battled the flames for nearly two hours before successfully bringing the situation under control. While the exact cause of the fire remains unknown, prompt action by the fire department helped prevent a larger tragedy.
Firefighters also safely removed over 100 gas cylinders from the burning huts, a move credited with averting further explosions and potential fatalities. Despite the scale of the incident, no injuries have been reported.
