Pune: Heatwave Intensifies In Maharashtra: 49 Cases Of Heatstroke Reported; No Fatalities So Far

Pune, 23rd April 2025: As summer temperatures continue to rise sharply across Maharashtra, the number of heatstroke cases has also surged. According to the State Health Department, a total of 49 heatstroke cases have been reported between 1st March and 22nd April, with Nagpur recording the highest number of patients. Pune has also registered one confirmed case.
The breakdown of cases across the state shows Nagpur leading with eight patients, followed by Buldhana with seven, and Jalna and Parbhani with five each. Gadchiroli has recorded four cases, while Kolhapur, Latur, Nashik, Palghar, Raigad, and Wardha each reported two cases. Additionally, one case each was reported from Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Nanded, Dharashiv, Pune, Sangli, Thane, Washim, and Yavatmal.
The Health Department confirmed that despite the increase in cases, there have been no reported deaths due to heatstroke in the state so far.
Health officials noted that the city’s temperatures have touched 40°C. The heat-related illnesses are on the rise, with initial symptoms including excessive thirst and fatigue. Ignoring these signs could lead to heatstroke, which can seriously damage organs such as the kidneys and liver, and may even result in multiple organ failure.
Officials also cautioned against the consumption of roadside food and chilled beverages, as they often lead to gastrointestinal infections during the summer months.
The public has been advised to take precautions such as carrying water when outdoors, avoiding direct sunlight during peak afternoon hours, wearing loose and light-colored clothing, resting if feeling weak or overheated, and using ice packs to help lower body temperature.
