Dhayari, 21st April 2025: A dramatic daylight robbery at a jewellery store in the Dhayari area of Sinhagad Road has taken a surprising twist after police investigations revealed the entire incident was staged by the store owner himself to escape mounting debts. The Crime Branch has arrested two suspects in connection with the incident, including the owner’s cousin who allegedly helped orchestrate the fake heist.

The incident took place on April 15 at ‘Shri Jewellers’ near Kalubai Chowk in Dhayari. Initially reported as an armed robbery, two men had allegedly stormed into the store in broad daylight, threatened the owner and an employee with a toy pistol, and made off with gold ornaments weighing 22 tolas. During the scuffle that ensued, a part of the weapon dropped at the site, which was later found to be a toy gun. The police were quickly alerted and rushed to the scene.

Following a swift investigation, the Crime Branch arrested two suspects and began questioning them. It was during the interrogation that the shocking truth came to light: the store owner, burdened by debts amounting to ₹20–25 lakh, had conspired with his cousin to fake the robbery. The motive, according to police, was to evade his creditors by making it appear that his assets had been stolen.

The accused duo had fled the scene on a motorcycle, which was later found abandoned near Pu. La. Deshpande Garden on Sinhagad Road. Further investigations revealed that the motorcycle used in the escape had been stolen. Authorities are now tracing the origins of the stolen vehicle.
