Thackeray Brothers Hint at Reunion Ahead of BMC Polls, Stirring Maharashtra Politics

Mumbai, 20th April 2025: In a development that could reshape Maharashtra’s political landscape, speculation is rising over a possible reunion between Raj Thackeray and Uddhav Thackeray ahead of the crucial Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections. The potential coming together of the Thackeray cousins after nearly two decades of political estrangement has sparked intense interest and debate across party lines.
Raj Thackeray, who parted ways with Shiv Sena in 2005 to form the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS), has largely remained a separate force in state politics. Since then, ties between him and Uddhav Thackeray, leader of the Shiv Sena (UBT), have remained distant. However, recent events and speeches by both leaders suggest a shift in tone and priority, with both voicing concerns about the preservation of Marathi culture and identity.
In separate public addresses, both Raj and Uddhav emphasized the importance of safeguarding Maharashtra’s cultural values above political rivalry. Uddhav, in particular, sent a strong message that the interests of the state and its people override party lines. “Marathi Asmita cannot be compromised. Whatever it takes, we must protect it,” he said at a recent rally.
According to sources and local media reports, the Thackeray brothers are reportedly in informal talks, possibly exploring a united front to challenge the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), which currently holds significant influence in the BMC. The Shiv Sena (UBT) and MNS aligning could present a formidable opposition, particularly in Mumbai, where regional pride and identity politics often play a decisive role. The Congress and NCP, Uddhav’s allies in the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA), have cautiously welcomed the move, saying it could help unite the opposition against the BJP.
If the Thackeray cousins do reunite, it could mark the beginning of a new political chapter in Maharashtra one rooted in shared legacy, regional pride, and perhaps, reconciliation.
