Pune, 20th April 2025: The city of Pune witnessed a sharp rise in minimum temperatures on Saturday, intensifying heat stress for residents already grappling with daytime highs above 40°C. Lohgaon stood out as the hottest spot overnight, recording 25.3°C — nearly 5 degrees Celsius above the seasonal average.

Shivajinagar also saw warmer-than-usual conditions, with the minimum temperature pegged at 22.5°C, while Koregaon Park and Magarpatta registered 25.2°C and 25.8°C, respectively. The elevated nighttime temperatures are drawing concern from health professionals, who warn that such conditions can prevent the body from recovering after prolonged exposure to daytime heat.

“These high minimum temperatures are worrisome,” said a public health expert based in Pune. “When nights remain warm, the human body doesn’t get the necessary cooldown, increasing risks of heat-related illnesses.”

By 3 PM on Saturday, Pune’s real-feel temperature — a combination of actual temperature and humidity — touched 40°C, according to a private weather service. Morning observations showed Lavale recording 100% relative humidity, while Shivajinagar logged 51%, further compounding the discomfort.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) reported a maximum temperature of 39.4°C in Shivajinagar — 1.4°C above the norm. Lohgaon, meanwhile, experienced a blistering high of 42.5°C, which was 4.5°C above normal for the area.

Explaining the weather pattern, IMD-Pune meteorologist S.D. Sanap said, “There has been a noticeable increase in moisture levels due to a trough that extended from northeast Vidarbha down to the Comorin region. This has resulted in a 5-10% rise in relative humidity, affecting local weather conditions.”

Discussing regional differences within the city, an expert informed, “Lohgaon tends to be hotter than other areas due to its rocky, dry terrain and limited green cover. In contrast, western Pune — with its greenery, dam backwaters, and proximity to the Western Ghats — generally remains cooler and benefits from natural temperature regulation.”

With temperatures continuing to rise and no immediate relief in sight, authorities and experts are urging residents to stay hydrated, avoid outdoor activities during peak hours, and watch for signs of heat-related illness.
