Girl Allegedly Abducted from Pune University Campus, Two Detained

Pune, 19th April 2025: A tense situation unfolded on the campus of Savitribai Phule Pune University (SPPU) on Friday night after a girl was reportedly forced into a car by an unidentified man near the girls’ hostel area. While the primary suspect fled the scene with the girl, two of his accomplices were caught by vigilant students and campus security, and later handed over to the police.
The incident has triggered serious concerns over student safety, especially as it comes on the heels of several troubling developments at the university in recent months—including the reported presence of alcohol, drugs, and repeated cases of harassment on campus.
According to eyewitnesses, the girl was crying and appeared distressed inside a parked car near the Marathi Department. When security guards approached the vehicle, the main suspect drove off with the girl. His two associates attempted to flee on foot but were apprehended by students.
The two detained suspects are residents of the Sangvi and Aundh areas. One of them left behind a bag and a mobile phone in the car. Police are currently interrogating both individuals, though they have yet to provide any substantial information. It is still unclear whether the girl is a student of SPPU.
Chatushrungi police are leading the investigation and are working to identify and trace the absconding suspect using CCTV footage and vehicle registration data.
Rising Concern Over Campus Security
The incident has further inflamed tensions among the student community, many of whom are calling for urgent action.
“In the past two months, the safety of female students at the university has become a serious concern. Recently, a man was caught performing obscene acts in front of a student, liquor and drugs were found in hostels, and now a girl has been taken away in a car by an unknown person. These incidents have created fear among students. The university’s security system has failed. If immediate measures are not taken, the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP) will launch a strong protest,” said Shiva Barole, ABVP Pune leader.
Police have yet to confirm whether the incident is a case of kidnapping, but the investigation is ongoing.
