How To Check Gold Purity At Home Using Simple Methods

Mumbai, 16th April 2025: With the rising demand for gold in India, concerns about gold purity have become increasingly significant among buyers. Many people are unsure about how to verify the authenticity of gold jewellery or coins, especially when purchasing from local markets or small vendors. Experts and industry officials suggest that knowing a few simple techniques can help consumers ensure they are investing in genuine gold and avoid financial losses.
According to jeweller Sunil Sharma, 42, from Zaveri Bazaar, Mumbai, “Gold buyers often rely solely on the seller’s word, but there are practical ways to check gold purity at home. These methods can safeguard customers from fraud and ensure they get the value for their money.” The Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) recommends looking for the BIS hallmark, which is a government certification of gold purity. The hallmark includes the BIS logo, the purity in carats, and the jeweller’s identification mark. Sharma added that the absence of a hallmark should be a red flag for buyers.
Another widely used method is the magnet test. Pure gold is non-magnetic, so if the jewellery is attracted to a magnet, it may contain other metals. Ramesh Gupta, 37, a goldsmith from Pune, explained, “While the magnet test is not foolproof, it is an easy first step. For more accuracy, buyers can use a nitric acid test kit, which is available at jewellery stores. When a drop of nitric acid is applied to gold, pure gold will not react, but impure gold will show a greenish reaction.”
A simple home test involves rubbing the gold item on a ceramic plate. If the streak left behind is golden yellow, the item is likely pure. If it leaves a black mark, it may be mixed with other metals. Industry experts also advise checking the weight and dimensions of gold coins or bars, as pure gold is denser than most metals. Using a precise weighing scale and comparing the results with standard gold weight charts can help identify adulteration.
To further assist consumers, the government has launched mobile applications and online portals where buyers can verify the authenticity of their gold purchases by entering the hallmark number. According to the BIS, “Consumers should always insist on a bill and verify the hallmark number through official channels for added security.”
Despite these methods, experts caution that the most reliable way to check gold purity is through professional testing at certified laboratories. However, these simple techniques can empower consumers to make informed decisions and reduce the risk of being cheated. As gold prices fluctuate and demand surges, being aware of these tricks is essential for anyone planning to invest in gold.
In summary, checking for the BIS hallmark, using the magnet and ceramic plate tests, and verifying weight are practical steps for buyers. Authorities recommend that consumers remain vigilant and use all available resources to confirm gold purity. As the festive season approaches, these precautions can help ensure a safe and satisfactory gold buying experience.
