Pune, 11th April 2025: The much-anticipated Hindi film “Phule”, based on the life and legacy of social reformers Mahatma Jyotirao Phule and Savitribai Phule, was scheduled to be released today on the occasion of Mahatma Phule Jayanti. However, following objections raised by some organizations over certain scenes in the movie, the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC) postponed the release.

Speaking at a press conference held in Pune, the film’s director Ananth Mahadevan clarified that all the amendments suggested by the censor board have been incorporated, and the film has now received a U certificate. “There is no pressure from any group, and no scene from the movie has been cut,” Mahadevan said. He also appealed to critics to refrain from forming opinions based solely on the trailer, and instead, watch the entire film before passing judgment.

Actor Pratik Gandhi, who plays Mahatma Phule in the film, also addressed the press. Describing Phule as India’s “first real-life superhero,” Gandhi said, “The work done by Mahatma Phule is beyond imagination. I feel honored to portray such a great historical figure on screen. My prior theatre experience helped me immensely in preparing for this role.”

Mahadevan shared that the team studied several books on both Jyotirao and Savitribai Phule while developing the script. The initial version of the film spanned nearly 7–8 hours, which was later condensed into a 2–2.15 hour cinematic presentation, retaining all the essential aspects of their journey.

Presented by Zee Studios in collaboration with Dancing Shiva Films and Kingsmen Productions, Phule is set for a worldwide release on 25th April 2025. The film highlights the couple’s relentless efforts in women’s education, caste eradication, and social reform.

Alongside Pratik Gandhi, actress Patralekhaa plays the role of Savitribai Phule. The trailer suggests a powerful portrayal of these revolutionary figures, bringing their ideologies, values, and social movements to life on screen. According to the makers, “Phule” is not merely a historical retelling but a cultural and intellectual experience that aims to awaken awareness among today’s generation.
