CME Pune Hosts Defence Seminar on IED Disposal, AI and Robotics in Focus

Dapodi, 11th April 2025: A Seminar on Counter Improvised Explosive Devices and Unexploded Explosive Ordnances Disposal was successfully organized at the College of Military Engineering, Pune under the aegis of HQ ARTRAC on 09 Apr 2025. The Hybrid-Mode Seminar brought together eminent speakers, subject matter experts, and leaders from academia to discuss the methods of disposal of Unexploded Ordnances and Improvised Explosive Devices, delve into the investigation of blasts through case studies, and explore the infusion of the latest niche technologies and robots into the domain.
The seminar aimed to explore, expound, and share innovative and niche technology that has been introduced into the field, in both air and maritime domains. It also discussed various case studies and post-blast investigations and analyses of incidents around the globe. It provided in-depth discussions on ongoing efforts and developments in the countermeasures against the Improvised Explosive Device threat, to uphold the motto ‘Any Mission, No Casualty.’
Delivering the Keynote Address, Lt Gen D S Kushwah, AVSM, SM, Chief of Staff, ARTRAC, emphasized the critical need for developing niche and the latest technologies in the field to ensure that all operations are automated through UnManned Aerial Vehicles, UnManned Ground Vehicles, and AI-based sensors, eliminating the risk to manpower in such highly sensitive operations.
The seminar covered an Environmental Scan and threat management on aerial and maritime-based Explosive Ordnances Disposal, the adoption of niche, cutting-edge technology, and real-world case studies in the domain of Counter Improvised Explosive Devices Operations and Post-Blast Investigations. This exchange of ideas, innovations, and best practices is expected to enhance the resilience and efficacy of such operations and open avenues for new tech partnerships with industry partners.
A key highlight of the event was the equipment display and exhibition featuring 16 companies showcasing the latest equipment, robots, sensors, drones, and software available in the industry today. The display not only enriched the knowledge of participants and attendees but also facilitated crucial collaborations between the Tri-Services, Academia, and Industries, thus driving innovation and economic growth.
By fostering dialogue and collaboration, this seminar has set the stage for the adoption of new techniques and technologies into operations, contributing to a better understanding of these destructive weapons and helping the Armed Forces tackle the threat of Unexploded Ordnances and Improvised Explosive Devices in a safe and efficient way.
