What Every Woman Should Know About Breast Cancer And Breast Self-Exam

Mumbai, 10th April 2025: Breast cancer continues to be one of the most common cancers among women around the world. When caught early, treatment is often simpler, and survival rates are significantly higher. That’s why understanding the early warning signs and making breast self-exams a regular habit is so important. In this article, we take a closer look at the early symptoms of breast cancer and share how you can perform an effective self-exam, an easy yet vital step in protecting your health.
Early Signs of Breast Cancer are :
• Unusual lump or swelling in the breast or armpit (may be painless)
• Change in breast shape or size, especially if one looks different or swollen
• Nipple discharge, such as blood or clear fluid, without squeezing
• Inward turning of the nipple (nipple retraction)
• Skin changes like redness, dimpling, or an orange peel texture
• Persistent pain or discomfort in the breast
These signs may not always mean cancer, but noticing them early and seeking medical advice can make a big difference. A breast self-examination (SBE) is a quick and easy way to check for any unusual changes in your breasts. It’s something every woman can do at home, ideally, once a month.
Step 1: Look in the Mirror
• Remove your top and bra, and stand in front of a mirror.
• With hands on hips, look for changes in size, shape, or skin.
• Raise your arms to check if both breasts and nipples are in their usual position.
Step 2: Feel While Lying Down
• Lie down and place one hand behind your head.
• Use the other hand to feel the opposite breast in a circular motion, from the nipple outward.
• Cover the whole area, including under the armpit.
• Repeat on the other side.
Step 3: Check the Nipples
• Gently press each nipple to check for any discharge.
• Look for skin changes or if the nipple is turning inward.
It only takes a few minutes, but it can make a lifetime of difference. Women of all ages are encouraged to know their bodies and speak to a healthcare professional if anything feels unusual.
