New Shirur-Khed-Karjat Route Proposed To Ease Pune-Mumbai Traffic; 135 Km Corridor Awaits Cabinet Approval

Pune, 22nd March 2025: To reduce traffic congestion on the Pune-Mumbai route, the Public Works Department (PWD) has proposed a new Shirur-Khed-Karjat road, which will serve as an alternative corridor. The proposal has been submitted to the state government and is currently awaiting cabinet approval. Once sanctioned, this four-lane route will provide a new travel option to Mumbai, reducing the strain on the existing Chakan-Shikrapur-Talegaon-Lonavala route.
At present, vehicles from Marathwada heading towards Mumbai are forced to use the Chakan and Shirur MIDC stretch, which causes heavy traffic on Nagar Road. With the new route, freight vehicles, which currently rely on a single road to reach Mumbai, will have an additional option, reducing congestion in Pune city.
The proposed route will span approximately 135 km, connecting Shirur-Pabal-Rajgurunagar-Shirvali-Pait-Vandre-Karjat, and will eventually link to Panvel and Uran, enhancing connectivity. The PWD plans to execute the project on a Build-Operate-Transfer (BOT) basis. The proposal was submitted to the state government 18 months ago and has since received clearances from various departments. It now awaits final approval from the state cabinet.
Key Features of the Project:
– Route Length: 135 km from Shirur to Karjat, connecting Panvel and Uran.
– Cost: Estimated at ₹12,000 crore, covering land acquisition and road construction.
– Economic Boost: The new corridor is expected to promote industrial and agricultural growth.
– Time Savings: Faster travel time for commuters and reduced traffic burden on Pune city roads.
– Four-Lane Road: The project aims to create a multi-nodal corridor, enhancing transport efficiency.
