‘The Durga Project’ will unveil a mix of Indian classical music and American dance

Pune,January 8, 2018: Pune will soon experience a magnificent portrayal of devotion created with amalgamation of Indian instrumental music and American contemporary dance. ‘Kalavardhini Charitable Trust’ is organizing such one of its kind program- ‘The Durga Project’ to celebrate 30 years of its inception. The program, originally created in New York by the ‘Battery Dance Company’, will present an invention of American contemporary dance on Indian mythology. This program will be held on Sunday, January 14, 2018 at Yashwantrao Chavan Natyagruha, Kothrud at 6.30 pm.

This information was given by Arundhati Patwardhan, Secretary, Kalavardhini Charitable Trust. She also expressed that through ‘The Durga Project’, the power, energy and devotion of Durga Devi will be seen through unique combination of dance and music.

Jonathan Hollander, President, Artistic Director and choreographer of the ‘Battery Dance Company’ became interested in Indian classical dance forms at the young age. Five foreign dancers from ‘Battery Dance Company’, along with Bharatnatyam dance artist Unnath H.R. who will beautifully showcase the essence of Durga with dance moves. Music has been contributed by acclaimed Hindustani vocalists Pt. Rajan and Pt. Sajan Mishra, whose Raag Durga served as the impetus for the piece. Additional music, “Garuda’s Dream,” has been contributed by Sangita Sounds, and a specially recorded tabla solo by Samir Chatterjee links the score together.

Senior Bharatnatyam Dancer Sucheta Bhide – Chapekar said, “Twenty-five years ago, I had got an opportunity to present my understanding of Tagore’s poetry through dance in ‘Song of Tagore’ program by Jonathan Hollander. That experience was very beautiful. Jonathan has love for Indian thought and philosophy. In the new dancing drama of ‘Durga’, it is a combination of Indian musical and American contemporary dance, and it will be a delight to see this dance in Pune.”
