Boney Kapoor’s Recommedation Helped Anil Kapoor Land Role in Mr India

Mumbai, 24th February 2025: Producer Boney Kapoor’s recommendation played a crucial role in his brother Anil Kapoor securing the lead role in the iconic 1987 film “Mr India”, according to recent revelations about the casting process. The superhero film, directed by Shekhar Kapur, became a landmark in Indian cinema and launched Anil Kapoor to stardom. However, the role was initially intended for other leading actors of the time.
Salim-Javed, the renowned screenwriting duo, had originally written the character of Arun Verma with Rajesh Khanna in mind. When Khanna was deemed unsuitable, they approached Amitabh Bachchan for the part. Bachchan, however, declined the offer, feeling that the invisible hero concept would overshadow his performance.
It was at this juncture that Boney Kapoor suggested his brother Anil for the role. The recommendation proved fortuitous, as Anil Kapoor’s portrayal of the invisible hero resonated strongly with audiences and critics alike. Anil Kapoor, in a previous interview, acknowledged that he brought his own style to the character, aware that it was originally meant for Bachchan.
“I added my own touch to ensure the audience wouldn’t realize it was initially intended for someone else,” the actor stated.
The film’s success catapulted both Anil Kapoor and his co-star Sridevi to new heights in their careers. “Mr India” went on to become the second highest-grossing Indian film of 1987, earning ₹100 million at the box office.
Shekhar Kapur, the film’s director, recently revealed that the production team, including Anil and Boney Kapoor, were apprehensive during the film’s release. “We were all scared,” Kapur said, highlighting the innovative nature of the project for its time.
As “Mr India” approaches its 37th anniversary, discussions about a potential sequel have surfaced. Boney Kapoor has hinted at being approached by a foreign studio for a follow-up to the beloved classic, though details remain under wraps.
The enduring popularity of “Mr India” serves as a testament to the impact of Boney Kapoor’s casting recommendation and Anil Kapoor’s memorable performance in shaping one of Indian cinema’s most iconic films.
