EMERGENCY OTT RELEASE: WHEN AND WHERE TO WATCH KANGANA RANAUT’S CONTROVERSIAL FILM

Mumbai, 21st February 2025: Kangana Ranaut’s highly anticipated and controversial film “Emergency” is set to make its digital debut on Netflix on March 17, 2025, following its theatrical release earlier this year. The historical drama, which depicts the tumultuous period of the Indian Emergency from 1975 to 1977, stars Ranaut as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
The film faced numerous challenges during its production and release. Ranaut, who also directed and co-produced the movie, revealed in an interview that she had to mortgage her home to fund the project due to lack of support from major production houses. The release was delayed multiple times, with the original theatrical date pushed from September 6, 2024, to January 17, 2025, due to certification issues with the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC).
“Emergency” sparked controversy even before its release, with the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) and other Sikh organizations protesting against its depiction of the Emergency period. Several theaters in Punjab refused to screen the film, and various political groups called for a ban, claiming it distorted history and disrespected certain communities.
Despite the controversies, the film managed to earn over Rs 17 crore net domestically in its first two weeks of theatrical release. However, it has been banned in Bangladesh due to escalating political tensions between India and Bangladesh.
The star-studded cast includes Anupam Kher, Shreyas Talpade, Vishak Nair, Milind Soman, and the late Satish Kaushik in key roles. As “Emergency” transitions to the streaming platform, it remains to be seen how audiences will react to its portrayal of one of India’s most controversial political events.
