Pune: Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers Celebrates 82nd Corps Day with Tributes to Military and Sporting Heroes
Pune, 15th October 2024: The Corps of Electronics and Mechanical Engineers (EME) celebrated its 82nd Corps Day on 15 October 2024, marking over eight decades of dedicated service to the Indian Army. Lieutenant General Dhiraj Seth, Army Commander, Southern Command, alongwith other senior dignitaries attended the event.
Since its raising in 1943, the EME Corps has played a vital role in ensuring the Indian Army’s Operational Readiness by maintaining a wide range of equipment. The EME Corps has developed a robust Combat Force Regeneration capability, an essential factor in modern warfare. It provides engineering support at all levels, from units to Army Base Workshops, ensuring the upkeep of equipment from Small Arms to Missile Systems and Main Battle Tanks to Aviation equipment. Its ability to operate in extreme environments, from deserts to high-altitude regions and quickly adapt to the changing operational dynamics has resulted in a high state of Operational Readiness of the Combat Equipment of the Indian Army.
The Corps has also produced exceptional athletes, including Padma Shri awardee Milkha Singh, famously known as the ‘Flying Sikh’ and mountaineering pioneers like Maj HPS Ahluwalia, a key member of India’s first successful expedition to Mount Everest in 1965.
The highlight of the event was the presence of Padma Shri awardee MurlikantPetkar, an EME Veteran and India’s first Paralympic gold medalist. Petkar’s inspiring achievements, particularly his gold in the 50-meter freestyle swimming event at the 1972 Paralympics, have made him an idol for the current generation of Para-athletesembodying the motto of the Corps of EME, ‘KARAM HI DHARAM’.
General Officer Commanding-in-Chief, Southern Command commended the achievements of all ranks of the Corps and exhorted them to scale newer heights in the times to come.
