Pune, 15th October 2024: ‘Mission Brain Attack’, a nation-wide campaign, focussed on end- to- end care for strokes that was recently launched by the Indian Stroke Association (ISA) in Varanasi, received an overwhelming response in Pune. It begins with addressing prevention and moves on to acute management and rehabilitation. Global statistics reveal that one among every four individuals may suffer from stroke.

Addressing the press conference, Dr Nirmal Surya, President, ISA, opined,” People usually overlook symptoms of signs before brain stroke, preferring home remedies, which results in a full-blown brain stroke. People lose their chance of diagnosing the brain stroke in golden period. 4 hours 30 minutes is considered to be a Golden Hour when patient can be taken to the hospital to reverse the stroke.
In order to make people aware of the golden period and early diagnosis, we have introduced a formula named BE FAST “.

B – Balance

E – vision loss

F – Facial deviation

A – Arm & Leg weakness

S – Speech disturbance

T – Time, call 108 or Ambulance to reach to a Stroke Ready hospital (With CT scan availability)

Stroke is the third most common cause of death and disability. The occurrence of brain stroke results in the death of 20 million neurons per minute. One out of four people stand at the risk of brain stroke. In order to create more awareness about brain stroke, Emcure in association with ISA has come up with ‘Mission Brain Attack’.

Dr N R Ichaporia observed, “70 – 80 % of brain strokes are preventable. Brain Stroke is a preventable disease.
Today, in Talukas like Akluj, physicians have done more than 100 Thrombolysis. Last year, we managed to do 6000 Thrombolysis a year against 4000 strokes per day. This explains the huge gap in the demand and supply of treatment.”

Dr Rahul Kulkarni, President, Neurological Society of Pune, urged one and all to stay alert and recognize the symptoms of brain attack at an early stage and take necessary action immediately.

Dr Anand Alurkar, Past President of ISA, waxed eloquent on the effectiveness of therapy and the high recovery rates in cases of timely treatment.
