Pune, 12th October 2024: The court on Saturday ordered the accused in the Bopdev Ghat gang rape case to remain in police custody until October 15. The police informed the court that the accused would undergo a medical examination and DNA testing during this period.

The horrific incident took place on October 3 at Bopdev Ghat, where a college girl and her friend were assaulted by a group of men. The girl was gang-raped, and the perpetrators terrorized the victims with a sharp weapon, identified as a koyta (sharp weapon). One of the accused, a 25-year-old man, was arrested from the Yeolewadi area near Kondhwa. He was presented in court on Saturday.

According to Assistant Public Prosecutor Advocate Vijaysinh Jadhav, the crime is of a grave nature, and the investigation requires a detailed examination of the evidence, including medical tests and DNA analysis of the accused. The police also need to recover the vehicle and other items used in the crime, such as a gold chain that was snatched from the victim under threats.

While one suspect is in custody, his two accomplices are still at large. The arrested accused’s role is critical to identifying the absconding individuals. Advocate Jadhav emphasized the need for further police custody to locate the remaining suspects and to gather more evidence.

The three accused are originally from Madhya Pradesh and reportedly came to Pune with the intent of committing robbery. Before the crime, they allegedly switched off their mobile phones, drank alcohol, and planned to loot unsuspecting victims. When they spotted the college students alone at Bopdev Ghat, they attacked, brutally beating the victims and sexually assaulting the girl.

The court has granted the police time to investigate the case further, as the search for the remaining suspects continues.
