12 Coaches Of Bagmati Express Derailed After Collision With Goods Train; 19 Injured, No Casualties Reported

Chennai, 12th October 2024: A train accident occurred near Karaipettai in Tamil Nadu on Friday (11th October) night. Reportedly, 12 coaches of Bagmati Express (train number 12578) going from Mysore in Karnataka to Darbhanga in Bihar derailed after colliding with a goods train at around 8.30 pm on Friday. 19 passengers were injured in the accident and have been admitted to the hospital. The condition of four of these passengers is said to be critical. Meanwhile, the Southern Railway has started a high-level investigation into the accident.

The General Manager of Southern Railway, RN Singh stated that the train was not supposed to stop at Karaipettai station. The train was given the green signal after leaving Chennai. The driver was following the signal properly. But the train went on the loop line instead of the main line and the accident happened due to the mistake. He has said that the accident will be investigated. Singh said that there were no casualties in the accident. Southern Railway has changed the timings of all trains passing through this section.

News agency IANS quoted that according to railway sources, the train was running at a speed of around 75 kmph. “The Bagmati Express crossed the Ponneri railway station at 8.27 pm. It was then given the green signal to pass through the main line to the next station, Karaipettai. There, instead of proceeding on the main line, the train burned into the loop line where it collided with a goods train,” the Southern Railway said in a statement.

According to the information, as soon as the information was received, the team of the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) immediately reached the spot and started relief and rescue work immediately.
