Pune, 10th October 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) removed the BRT route from Viman Nagar Chowk to Somnath Nagar Chowk on Vadgaon Sheri Nagar Road, covering a distance of 300 meters, with the help of a JCB at night on Tuesday (8th October).

The Yerwada to Viman Nagar Chowk route was removed ten months ago on the grounds that it would relieve traffic congestion. Now, out of eight kilometers, only three kilometers of the BRT route remain on the road.

For the past two years, members of various political parties have been demanding the removal of the BRT on this route, citing frequent traffic jams. The PMC and the Pune Mahanagar Parivahan Mahamandal Limited (PMPML) have faced criticism for neglecting this route, which transports lakhs of passengers every day. Additionally, accidents have occurred due to the faulty implementation of the BRT project.

Instead of rectifying the defects in the BRT route, the PMC requested a report from the Gokhale Institute, and based on that, the Yerwada to Viman Nagar Chowk BRT route was removed in December 2023.

Following this, several office bearers, including local MLA Sunil Tingre, demanded the removal of the 300-meter BRT section from Viman Nagar Chowk to Somnath Nagar Phata. Accordingly, the PMC sought a report from the traffic police and removed the BRT route on Tuesday night.
