Bopdev Ghat Gang Rape Case: Over 300 Pune Police Officers on the Hunt for Accused; Assistance Taken from Other Districts

Pune, 8th October 2024: Pune police are intensifying their search for the accused involved in the Bopdev Ghat gang rape case. Over 300 police officers, including personnel from other districts, have joined the investigation to track down the accused.

The incident took place on Thursday night (3rd October), when a college student, who had gone for a walk with her friend around 11 pm, was brutally attacked. The three accused assaulted the young woman and her friend with a bamboo stick, tied the young man with a shirt and belt, and then sexually assaulted the girl.

Joint Commissioner of Police Ranjan Kumar Sharma stated that multiple investigation teams, including the Pune Police Crime Branch, are actively working on the case. In addition, experienced officers from neighboring districts have been called in to assist. “More than 300 police officers and personnel are involved in the search,” Sharma added.

So far, over 200 suspects have been questioned in connection with the case. Based on the victim’s description, police have released sketches of two of the accused. Pune Police has also announced a ₹10 lakh reward for information leading to their arrest.

As part of the investigation, authorities have gathered information from 3,000 mobile phone users who were in the Bopdev Ghat area at the time of the incident. CCTV footage from the vicinity is being analyzed, and technical analysis is underway with the help of AI technology.

Joint Commissioner Sharma also mentioned that private cyber experts have been brought in to assist with the investigation.
