Pune, 7th October 2024: The retreating monsoon season has begun in Maharashtra, and humid winds from the Bay of Bengal are making their way to the state. As a result, isolated places across the state could experience rain with thundershowers from Wednesday, 9th October, to Saturday, 12th October.

According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), monsoon winds have started withdrawing from the state. Simultaneously, humid winds from the Bay of Bengal are creating conditions for rainfall accompanied by lightning and thunder. These showers are likely to occur in the evening as the hot, dry, and vaporous air moves into the upper atmosphere. The IMD has also noted that while temperatures will rise during the day, rain is expected in the evenings due to the local weather dynamics.

The IMD had previously forecasted above-average rainfall for the state in October. However, retired IMD scientist Anupam Kashyapi stated that rainfall may be less than predicted.

Manikrao Khule, another retired IMD scientist, explained that heavy rainfall in the Northeastern states and the Himalayan foothills (including Sikkim, West Bengal, and parts of Uttar Pradesh) tends to reduce rainfall in Central India, including Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, and Chhattisgarh. “Rainfall from low-pressure areas generally affects the Northeast and Himalayan foothills. Due to this pattern, there was no rain in the first week of October, but there is a possibility of rain from 9th to 13th October,” Khule further added.
