Pune, 5th October 2024: The Regional Transport Office (RTO) has initiated a review of school vans and buses following the recent incident where two minor girls were sexuallyaa assaulted in a school van. The safety of students traveling in these vehicles has become a pressing concern, prompting the RTO to intensify its inspection efforts. Vehicles found in violation of safety norms are being penalized.

As part of the review, the RTO has deployed 10 teams, consisting of 20 officers and staff members, to inspect school buses and vans. The teams are tasked with verifying compliance with transportation rules, including the mandatory presence of women attendants in school buses. Sub-Regional Transport Officer Swapnil Bhosale stated that the inspections also include meetings with school principals to assess the overall transportation system for students.

Regional Transport Officer Archana Gaikwad noted that, under the School Student Transport Rules, it is mandatory for schools to establish a School Transport Committee. This committee includes representatives from the police, RTO, and parents. A dedicated website, schoolbussafetypune.org, has been set up to track compliance with safety regulations. Schools are required to submit details about their student transport systems on this platform.

“All schools must adhere to the School Student Transport Rules. We will check for compliance, and any violations will be reported to the Education Department for further action,” Gaikwad said.

Parents are urged to report any violations, such as school buses or vans exceeding their capacity or charging excessive fees. Complaints can be filed with the RTO at [email protected].
