Pune, 1st October 2024: A case of fraud has come to light as a cab driver cheated several CNG pumps in the city through a fake UPI app. The driver reportedly scanned the QR code for payment and showed the staff a successful transaction. However, as the staff did not receive the payment, they checked the driver’s phone, revealing that the payment app he was using was fake.

One incident occurred at a CNG pump of Mahanagar Gas in the MHADA Colony area of Ambernath. On Monday (30th September) evening, a cab driver came to fill gas at this pump. After filling up, he scanned the QR code and showed a screenshot of the remittance before leaving, all while the staff were unaware of the situation. The same driver had also cheated the pump staff using the same method on Sunday (29th September).

The staff noted the cab’s number. When the driver returned on Monday evening, they checked his mobile phone as soon as he scanned the QR code. Finding no entry of money, they immediately apprehended him and called the police.

Upon interrogation, the police discovered that the payment app was fake. The cab driver admitted his wrongdoing and demonstrated the scam in real-time. The Shivajinagar police have detained the driver and taken him to the station for further investigation.
