Kondhwa, 29th September 2024: Four workers today lost their lives at a glass factory in the Yewalewadi area of Pune city. Two others were seriously injured when a large glass box collapsed on them. The incident has shocked the city, sparking concern over safety measures in industrial setups.

The accident took place at India Glass Solutions, a factory situated behind a CNG petrol pump on Yewalewadi Road. According to initial reports, a glass container fell, trapping six workers underneath. Despite swift action by the fire brigade, four of the workers were declared dead on arrival at Sassoon Hospital, while the two survivors are currently receiving medical treatment.

The deceased have been identified as Pawan Ramchandra Kumar (40), Dhamendra Satyapal Kumar (40), Vikas Prasad Gautam (23), and Amit Shivshankar Kumar (27), all residents of Yewalewadi, hailing from Uttar Pradesh. The injured are Jagatpal Santaram Saroj (49), a laborer from Dhandekar Nagar, Yewalewadi, and Moneshwar, whose full name remains unknown.

Fire brigade officials were alerted to the accident at 1:36 p.m. Station Duty Officer Sameer Sheikh of Kondhwa Fire Station reported that 8 to 10 fire personnel and officials rushed to the spot and worked to rescue the trapped workers. Using cranes, they managed to remove the large, eight to ten-foot-tall glass boxes, uncovering the trapped workers. The victims were immediately transported to the hospital.

The cause of death was determined to be suffocation and cardiac arrest, resulting from the weight and injuries caused by the falling glass. The injured workers are undergoing treatment, and their condition remains critical.

The glass factory, owned by Hussain Tayyabali Mithawala, processes large glass sheets, which are then sold in the market. An investigation into the incident is underway, and the Kondhwa police are in the process of registering a case.

As per initial findings, the workers were inside a vehicle when the glass boxes collapsed. Authorities are now examining the circumstances that led to the boxes falling, as well as whether safety protocols were being followed at the time of the accident.
