Pune, 28th September 2024: The 20th edition of the Divya Kala Mela, a national-level fair dedicated to promoting the talents and entrepreneurial spirit of Divyangjan, was inaugurated today. Organized by the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), under the Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, the event was attended by distinguished guests, including Maharashtra Governor C.P. Radhakrishnan, Union Minister for Social Justice and Empowerment Dr. Virendra Kumar, and MP Shrirang Appa Barne.

This year’s fair features significant financial support, with the National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC) approving loans totaling ₹2 crore to help Divyangjan expand their businesses. In a notable gesture, motorized tricycles were also distributed to eligible participants to enhance their mobility.

Governor Radhakrishnan commended the talent and determination of the Divyangjan community, stating, “It is crucial for us to recognize and nurture the skills of these exceptional individuals. Supporting Divyang entrepreneurs and artists is essential for fostering a more inclusive society. Their contributions are vital for building a stronger India.” He emphasized the NDFDC’s financial assistance programs, which offer loans ranging from ₹50,000 to ₹50 lakh at annual interest rates between 4% and 9%. These loans are made available through state channelizing agencies, including Punjab National Bank and regional rural banks.

In his address, Union Minister Dr. Virendra Kumar highlighted the fair’s role as a marketing platform for products created by Divyangjan. “Divya Kala Mela serves as an invaluable opportunity for Divyangjan to showcase their skills and creativity,” he remarked. “To date, around 1,450 participants have taken part in these fairs nationwide, generating over ₹11.5 crore in revenue. Additionally, loans surpassing ₹10 crore have been granted to promote the growth of businesses run by Divyangjan.”

The Minister also noted the introduction of employment fairs alongside the Divya Kala Mela, creating additional job opportunities for participants. “Of the 1,400 individuals screened, 370 have been shortlisted, with more than 100 already receiving job offers. We aim to see Divyangjan employed in reputable organizations soon,” he added.

Following the success of 19 previous editions, this event aims to empower Divyangjan by providing them with a platform to display their talents and entrepreneurial capabilities. Future editions of the Divya Kala Mela are planned in other major cities, with a focus on highlighting local Divyang artisans and entrepreneurs.

The fair exemplifies the government’s commitment to economically empowering Divyangjan, transforming them into self-sufficient entrepreneurs and skilled craftsmen. Stalls at the event are provided free of charge, allowing Divyangjan to present their work on prominent platforms in metropolitan areas. This year, over 100 artisans, entrepreneurs, and artists from 18 states and union territories are showcasing their products and crafts.

Visitors can purchase unique handmade items from Divyang entrepreneurs and enjoy a variety of culinary offerings from across India. Evening cultural performances, featuring talented Divyang artists from both local and national backgrounds, will take place daily from 6 to 9 PM. The Divya Kala Mela will run until October 6, 2024, and entry is free for all attendees. The closing day will feature a special performance titled “Divya Kalashakti,” highlighting the remarkable talents of Divyang artists from across the country.

With 60 stalls and cultural presentations, the Mela aims to elevate the global recognition of the skills and abilities of Divyangjan.
