Pune: Water Release from Khadakwasla, Varasgaon, and Panshet Dams Amid Heavy Rainfall

Pune, 25th September 2024: Due to heavy rainfall in the catchment areas and full capacity of local dams, authorities have initiated the release of water into the Mutha River basin, according to a statement from the Sub Divisional Engineer, Mutha Canal Irrigation Sub Division, Swargate.

The discharge from Khadakwasla Dam spillway began earlier today, releasing 2,568 cusecs of water. By 7:00 p.m., the outflow increased to 6,743 cusecs, with the potential for adjustments depending on future rainfall.

At 8:00 p.m. tonight, water discharge from Varasgaon Dam began, with 2,976 cusecs being released from the spillway and an additional 600 cusecs through power generation, totaling 3,576 cusecs. Officials have warned that the discharge may be revised based on changing weather conditions.

Additionally, by 8:30 p.m., a total of 5,080 cusecs was released from Panshet Dam—4,480 cusecs through the spillway and 600 cusecs through the power plant.

Authorities have urged residents and visitors to avoid entering the riverbed, as water levels could rise unexpectedly. People with livestock or materials near the river are also advised to relocate them immediately.

This release is part of a precautionary measure to manage rising water levels in the region’s reservoirs.
