Pune, 25th September 2024: Due to heavy rains in the dam areas over the past two days, all five dams supplying water to Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad have reached full capacity. Consequently, water discharge into the Mula-Mutha and Pavana rivers will be increased from these dams. The Water Resources Department has issued a warning, urging people living near the riverbanks to remain alert for potential flooding.

The Khadakwasla Irrigation Division released a statement, cautioning residents of Pune to stay vigilant. The statement reported that the Khadakwasla Dam near Pune is 90.39% full, while Panshet, Varasgaon, and Temghar Dams have all reached 100% capacity. Similarly, the Pavana Dam, which supplies Pimpri-Chinchwad, is also filled to 100% capacity.

With the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasting heavy rainfall between 24th and 29th September 2024, there is a likelihood of significant water discharge in the Mula and Pavana river basins. The water release from the dams into the rivers will be adjusted according to rainfall levels.

In light of this, authorities have instructed citizens in the Pune Municipal area to avoid entering the Mutha riverbed, while those in the Pimpri-Chinchwad Municipal area are advised to stay clear of the prohibited (blue line) areas of the Pavana riverbed. Residents are also urged to move any materials or animals from riverbeds to safer locations. Citizens living in low-lying areas are advised to avoid entering the riverbeds altogether.
