Chennai, 20th September 2024: In a dramatic day of cricket in Chennai, where 17 wickets fell, India showcased a strong performance led by Jasprit Bumrah against Bangladesh. Bumrah set the tone by dismissing Shadman Islam early, who misjudged an in-swinger, and went on to claim the scalps of Mushfiqur Rahim, Taskin Ahmed, and Hasan Mahmud.

India took a commanding position in the first Test against Bangladesh, thanks to Bumrah’s stellar bowling. By the end of the second day, India had built a substantial lead of 308 runs. Bumrah’s 4 for 50 was instrumental, with solid support from Mohammed Siraj, Akash Deep, and Ravindra Jadeja.

Bangladesh managed only 149 in their first innings in response to India’s 376. India’s second innings had a shaky start but stabilized to 81 for 3 at stumps. Shubman Gill (33*) and Rishabh Pant (12*) were at the crease. Taskin Ahmed dismissed Rohit Sharma for 5, caught by Zakir Hasan at gully, while Yashasvi Jaiswal fell for 10 to Nahid Rana. Despite early wickets, India’s sizable first-innings lead kept them in control. Virat Kohli (17) and Gill added 39 runs for the third wicket to steady the innings.

Bangladesh’s cautious batting approach ultimately contributed to their downfall. Litton Das and Shakib Al-Hasan seemed comfortable during a 51-run partnership but both made unnecessary errors. Litton’s slog sweep off Ravindra Jadeja was caught by substitute fielder Dhruv Jurel, while Shakib’s reverse sweep off Jadeja deflected off his boots into Rishabh Pant’s gloves.

Akash Deep and Jadeja took two wickets each, with Siraj contributing one, as Bangladesh’s batting order collapsed. Akash Deep accelerated their fall by removing Zakir Hasan and Mominul Haq in quick succession. Earlier, Bangladesh had some success by quickly taking India’s last four wickets, including Ashwin (113) and Jadeja (86), who together added 199 runs over 240 balls and 189 minutes. Taskin Ahmed took three crucial wickets, dismissing Ashwin, Jadeja, and Akash Deep.

Hasan Mahmud claimed his second consecutive five-wicket haul, having dismissed Bumrah, following a similar feat against Pakistan earlier in Rawalpindi.
