Melbourne, 10th September 2024: Senior batter Steve Smith has praised Virat Kohli for his Australian-like mentality and demeanour. In an interview with Star Sports ahead of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy, Smith described Kohli as embodying the most Australian attitude among Indian players.

Smith, who has led Australia’s batting lineup for over a decade, commended Kohli for his aggressive approach to cricket. He noted that Kohli’s style of play is characterized by a fierce determination to dominate the opposition.

“Virat Kohli exhibits an Australian mindset in his approach and actions. His readiness to engage in battles and challenges, and his effort to gain the upper hand over the opposition, makes him probably the most Australian among Indian players,” Smith stated in a video posted by Star Sports on ‘X’.

Smith emphasized that the rivalry with Kohli is purely professional. He focuses on improving his performance for the Australian team rather than personal competition. Australia will face India in a five-Test series starting in November 2024, with Smith anticipated to play a key role, possibly as an opening batsman.

“There’s no personal rivalry. It’s about going out, scoring as many runs as possible, and contributing to Australia’s success,” Smith said.

He also mentioned that he and Kohli have a good rapport and often exchange messages. “We get along well, text each other occasionally, and he’s a great guy as well as a fantastic player. I look forward to facing him again this summer,” Smith added.
