Pune, 19th August 2024: The traffic police department has initiated discussions with a global technology company to address congestion at 302 signalized junctions across the city. Out of the 750 junctions in Pune, these 302 are equipped with traffic signals.

“We’ve already had a preliminary meeting with the technology firm, and further discussions are underway,” stated Additional Commissioner of Police Manoj Patil. “With their data, we can effectively manage traffic at these junctions by optimizing signal timings and deploying traffic personnel where needed,” he added.

The police explained that traffic congestion at these signals is caused by various factors, and they often receive information about traffic build-up after a delay. “However, the technology company can provide us with real-time data, enabling us to monitor the roads more efficiently. If there is a traffic jam or slow-moving traffic on a particular route, we can quickly respond,” Patil noted.

The tech giant is expected to supply live data on traffic movement to the traffic control room, which will receive alerts in real-time. A red color on the system indicates heavy congestion or a traffic jam, while green suggests smooth traffic flow.

In 2023, Pune was ranked among the top 10 most congested cities globally in a traffic congestion report. Of the four Indian cities surveyed, Bengaluru was ranked sixth, Pune seventh, New Delhi 44th, and Mumbai 54th.
