New Delhi/Pune, 16th August 2024: The Union Cabinet, under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light for the extension of the Pune Metro’s existing PCMC-Swargate line. The approved extension, known as the Swargate to Katraj Underground Line (Line-1B), will stretch over 5.46 kilometers, adding three underground stations to connect key areas including Market Yard, Bibwewadi, Balaji Nagar, and the Katraj suburbs.

This infrastructure project, which is designed to improve Pune’s urban connectivity, is slated for completion by February 2029. The total projected cost stands at ₹2,954.53 crore, with the expenses to be equally shared between the Government of India and the Government of Maharashtra, supplemented by contributions from bilateral agencies.

The extension will be integrated with the Swargate Multimodal Hub, a key transportation node that combines the Metro Station, MSRTC Bus Stand, and PMPML Bus Stand, facilitating smooth travel for commuters across and beyond Pune City. The new underground line will create a direct link between Pune’s southern regions and its northern and eastern areas, enhancing the overall connectivity via the District Court interchange station.

This strategic expansion is anticipated to greatly reduce road traffic congestion and improve safety for commuters by reducing the risk of accidents and minimizing pollution. Additionally, it will shorten travel times, contributing to the sustainable development of the city.

The Swargate to Katraj Underground Line will connect essential bus stops, railway stations, recreational spots such as the Rajiv Gandhi Zoological Park and Taljai Hill, shopping malls, residential neighborhoods, educational institutions, and major commercial hubs. It promises a faster and more cost-effective transportation alternative, particularly benefiting daily commuters including students, small business owners, and professionals. By 2027, the line is expected to serve around 95,000 passengers daily, with ridership projections rising to 1.97 lakh by 2057.

Maha-Metro will be responsible for executing the project, covering civil, electro-mechanical, and other associated works. Preparations are already underway, with pre-bid activities in progress and tender documents being prepared. Contracts for the project are expected to be floated soon.

This extension is poised to be a significant milestone in Pune’s infrastructural growth, unlocking the city’s economic potential and driving sustainable urban development.
