Yerwada, 16th August 2024: In a significant development aimed at alleviating traffic congestion at Yerwada’s Shastrinagar Chowk, the project plans for a new flyover and subway have been officially approved. Sunil Tingre, the MLA of Vadgaon Sheri, announced that the Pune Municipal Corporation’s Estimate Committee has given the green light to these infrastructure projects, with construction expected to commence before the upcoming assembly elections.

The proposed infrastructure enhancements are part of broader efforts to address the growing traffic problems on Pune’s city roads. Despite initial delays due to the lack of a no-objection certificate from the Department of Archaeology, Tingre’s continued efforts led to the Archaeology department granting approval for the projects in May.

Following this approval, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar instructed the municipal commissioner to prioritize and initiate these works. As a result, a budget of ₹97 crores was proposed for the flyover and subway projects, and this was officially approved in a meeting of the municipality’s Estimate Committee on Wednesday.

Project Details:

Subway at Shastrinagar Chowk: The planned subway will feature six tiers, including a three-lane road for vehicles traveling from Yerwada to Nagar Road Kharadi and another three-lane subway for vehicles heading towards Pune. The total estimated cost for this subway is ₹37 crores.

Flyover: A two-tiered flyover is planned for vehicles coming from Kharadi and Vimannagar, designed to ease the route to the golf club. This flyover is expected to cost ₹26 crores.

Additional Works: An additional ₹18 crores will be allocated for other improvements and infrastructure enhancements at the square.

These projects come in addition to the ongoing efforts to alleviate traffic on Pune-Ahmednagar road. The removal of Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system from Yerwada to Viman Nagar has already provided significant relief to motorists. Now, with the imminent start of the flyover and subway work at Shastrinagar Chowk, further improvements are expected. Additionally, construction of a double-decker flyover from Shirur to Ramwadi is set to begin soon, with the goal of making Ahmednagar Road signal-free in the near future.
