Pune, 14th August 2024: Google’s much-anticipated Made by Google event faced a major setback when the company’s advanced Artificial Intelligence (AI) model, Gemini, malfunctioned during a live demonstration. Held on Tuesday, the event aimed to showcase Gemini’s capabilities, but the AI faltered twice when asked questions, failing to provide any answers. The live-streamed event turned into an embarrassing situation for Google, as Gemini struggled to complete the tasks it was given, leading to concerns about the AI model’s reliability.

During the event, Google demonstrated the integration of Gemini with the Google Calendar application. However, when a specific question was posed, the AI failed to respond appropriately. Instead of providing an answer, Gemini reverted to a previous prompt and asked the user to re-enter the details. This issue occurred not once, but twice, leading to noticeable frustration among the viewers. The technical glitches did not go unnoticed, and social media platforms, particularly the microblogging site X (formerly known as Twitter), were soon flooded with users’ reactions and criticism of the AI model’s performance.

Despite the technical difficulties with Gemini, the event proceeded with the launch of the new Google Pixel 9 series. The series includes four devices: Google Pixel 9, Pixel 9 Pro, Pixel 9 Pro XL, and Pixel 9 Pro Fold. These devices were introduced as part of Google’s efforts to strengthen its foothold in the smartphone market. Among them, the Google Pixel 9 smartphone was highlighted as the most affordable option, equipped with a 50-megapixel dual camera setup.

The glitches during the event have sparked a debate about the readiness of AI technology for public use, raising questions about the robustness of Gemini and similar models in real-world applications.
