Pune, 8th August 2024: Google has announced it will discontinue the production of its Chromecast streaming device after nearly ten years in the market. The decision comes as the company shifts focus to its new Google TV Streamer. Chromecast, introduced in 2013, has sold over 100 million units globally, becoming one of Google’s most successful hardware products. This move marks the end of an era for a device that revolutionized content streaming.

Chromecast, a small, affordable dongle, allowed users to stream content from their phones and computers directly to their televisions by plugging it into the TV’s HDMI port. Over the years, the Chromecast line expanded to include various generations and variants such as Chromecast Audio and Chromecast Ultra.

Majd Bakar, Google’s Vice President of Engineering, Health, and Home, stated in a blog post, “Technology has evolved significantly since we launched the original Chromecast. Our investment in embedding Google Cast technology into millions of TV devices and Android TVs has driven us to develop beyond Chromecast.”

Google’s decision to cease Chromecast production aligns with its goal to maintain a consistent and advanced streaming experience for its users. The new Google TV Streamer, which will replace the Chromecast lineup, promises to offer enhanced capabilities for smart TVs. This new device features a processor that is 22% faster than Chromecast and supports both Thread and Matter smart home standards.

Bakar added, “We are taking the next step in developing streaming TV devices. The Google TV Streamer will add even more capabilities to your smart TV, building on the same Chromecast technology.”

The shift from Chromecast to Google TV Streamer represents Google’s commitment to innovation and improving user experience. As the company continues to evolve its product offerings, users can look forward to more advanced and integrated solutions for their streaming and smart home needs.
