Anti-Drugs Campaign: Pune Police’s ‘Nirdhar’ Initiative For Youth Rehabilitation

Pune, 8th August 2024: In response to the growing menace of drug abuse, the Pune City Police Commissionerate has launched a comprehensive program under the anti-drug campaign named ‘Nirdhar’.

In line with Pune Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar’s focus to make Pune City drug-free, this initiative aims to prevent drug addiction and associated criminal activities, particularly among juveniles and young adults.

On the ground level, the program is led by Shailesh Balkawde, Additional Commissioner (Crime). Speaking to Punekar News, Balkawde stated, “The ‘Nirdhar’ program is designed to robustly execute the anti-drug campaign by addressing both the supply and consumption aspects of drug-related issues. The overarching goal is to rehabilitate juvenile delinquents and young adults to prevent future crimes and steer them away from criminal activities.”

The initiative will include teams comprising the Police Inspector of the Bharosa Cell, and various police officers and personnel.

Scope and Structure of the Initiative:
The program targets all police stations, schools, colleges, vocational training institutions, and identified crime hotspots. It is being implemented in three stages:

1 . Students from Classes 8 to 12:
Lists of schools, junior colleges, and NGOs working on addiction and children’s rights will be compiled.
Counseling will be provided through government social organizations and specially assigned child welfare police officers.
Priority will be given to officers and personnel who are self-motivated and keen in the cause from a sense of social responsibility.

2. Out-of-School Students and Juvenile in Conflict with Law:
Lists of out-of-school students and juvenile in conflict with law involved in crimes will be prepared.
Information on the current status of cases and their involvement in criminal activities will be collected.
Information on the parents and residence of these juveniles will be documented.

3. Students Pursuing Vocational Education and Young Adults:
Information on social organizations, NGOs, prominent individuals, media representatives, and doctors within the jurisdiction will be collected.
Data on juveniles in conflict with law, their crimes, and their parents will be gathered.
Information on potential drug availability spots will be collected and actions will be taken.

Key Activities:
Training sessions for selected officers, personnel, and social organizations.
Monthly crime review meetings and recognition for top-performing police station teams.
Recognition for commendable NGOs/institutions.
Rehabilitating juvenile delinquents by obtaining information on pending cases and providing legal counseling.

Through these comprehensive efforts, the Pune City Police Commissionerate aims to create a safer and drug-free environment for the youth, ensuring their well-being and positive contribution to society.
