Over 1.8 Million Cars Sold in First Six Months of 2024; Tata, Maruti, Hyundai Lead

Pune, 30th July 2024: In the first six months of 2024, over 1.8 million cars were sold in India, with Tata, Maruti, and Hyundai leading the market. Monthly sales averaged 300,000 units, covering various segments, including SUVs, hatchbacks, and MUVs. The Tata Punch emerged as the most popular model, while Maruti’s Wagon R and Baleno followed closely. This surge in sales highlights the growing demand for vehicles in the country.

Reports indicate that the total sales of cars in India reached 1.8 million units in the first half of 2024. This translates to an average of 300,000 cars sold each month, reflecting the robust growth in the automotive market. The top-selling models included 16 SUVs or crossovers, eight hatchbacks, and four MUVs.

The Tata Punch, marketed as an affordable SUV, topped the sales charts with 110,308 units sold, capturing a 6.06% market share. Its popularity underscores the increasing preference for budget-friendly SUVs among Indian consumers.

Maruti Suzuki’s Wagon R secured the second spot with 99,668 units sold despite a 9% year-on-year decline in sales. The Wagon R held a 5.48% market share in the first half of 2024, continuing to be a favorite in the hatchback segment.

Maruti’s premium hatchback, the Baleno, also performed well with 94,521 units sold, accounting for a 5.20% market share. Although it saw a slight decrease in year-on-year sales, its position in the market remains strong.

In the compact SUV segment, Maruti’s Dzire sold 93,781 units, making it the third Maruti model in the top five. The Dzire holds a 5.16% market share, reflecting its steady demand.

Hyundai’s Creta, which received a facelift in January 2024, saw significant growth in demand. With 91,348 units sold, the Creta captured a 5.02% market share, solidifying its place among the top-selling SUVs.

These figures highlight the strong performance of leading car manufacturers in India, with Tata, Maruti, and Hyundai dominating the market. The automotive industry continues to thrive, driven by diverse consumer preferences and a wide range of offerings.
