Freedom at Midnight Teaser Reveals Critical Decisions in India’s Independence

Pune, 30th July 2024: The teaser for “Freedom at Midnight,” a new SonyLIV series created and directed by Nikkhil Advani, has been released, showcasing tense moments in India’s journey to independence. Set to premiere soon, the series delves into the crucial decision-making processes leading to India’s freedom and partition in 1947. Highlighting key historical figures, the teaser reveals the pivotal discussions surrounding the selection of India’s first Prime Minister, ultimately Jawaharlal Nehru, offering a gripping glimpse into the nation’s path to independence.

“Freedom at Midnight” features prominent actors portraying significant historical figures. In the teaser, Maulana Azad (Pawan Chopra) initially declared Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel (Rajendra Chawla) as the first Prime Minister of Independent India. However, Mahatma Gandhi (Chirag Vohra) intervenes, praising Patel but handing him the withdrawal form, announcing Jawaharlal Nehru (Sidhant Gupta) as the rightful choice. Patel later became India’s first Deputy Prime Minister and Home Minister.

Based on the 1975 non-fiction book by Larry Collins and Dominique Lapierre, this political drama explores the Indian independence movement. The series brings together previously untold stories and pivotal moments from the 1947 partition when British colonial rulers divided India into Pakistan and India. Produced by Monisha Advani and Madhu Bhojwani of Emmay Entertainment, with support from StudioNext and SonyLIV, the show is helmed by Nikkhil Advani as the showrunner and director.

SonyLIV and StudioNext CEO Danish Khan described “Freedom at Midnight” as their most ambitious project to date, aiming to create a series of unprecedented scope and influence. The adaptation promises a realistic portrayal of historical events in a thriller format, capturing global audiences. Khan praised Advani and his talented crew for their exceptional work in bringing the novel to life.

Nikkhil Advani revealed that the series was inspired by a casual conversation with Danish Khan about the renowned novel. He emphasized their unwavering dedication to authenticity throughout the process. “Freedom at Midnight” pays homage to the brave leaders of the independence struggle, including Sardar Vallabhbhai Patel, Jawaharlal Nehru, and Mahatma Gandhi. Emmay Entertainment aims to present a story that honors India’s history while resonating with viewers worldwide.
