Pune: Indian Army Mobilized for Relief Operations After Massive Landslide in Kerala, Floods In Sangli

Pune, 30th July 2024: The Southern Command of the Indian Army has mobilized troops for relief operations after requests from civil administration in Sangli (Maharashtra) and Kerala.

Wayanad, Kerala: Following a significant landslide in the Meppadi Panchayath of Vyithiri Taluk, Wayanad District, the Kerala Government requested assistance from the Indian Army to rescue around 250 stranded individuals. Responding promptly, the Indian Army deployed two rescue columns comprising approximately 200 soldiers from the Defence Security Corps (DSC) Centre in Kannur, accompanied by a medical team from the Military Hospital in Kannur and troops from the Territorial Army based in Kozhikode.

The landslide, which struck early this morning, devastated the hilly regions near Meppadi, leaving hundreds of people feared trapped. To aid in the rescue efforts, two helicopters from Air Force Station Sulur were dispatched. Additionally, the relief columns from the Defence Security Corps Centre in Kannur, equipped with rescue gear and other essential detachments, have been mobilized to support the ongoing rescue and relief operations.

Sangli District, Maharashtra: Concurrently, relief operations are underway in Sangli following damage assessment along a 20 km stretch of the Krishna River. The efforts involve the local Disaster Management Authority (DMA), the Superintendent of Police, and the Municipal Commissioner. The Indian Army has also established a medical camp to assist those evacuated by the district administration.
