Yerawada, 15th July 2024: A life-sentence prisoner from the open prison at Yerawada Central Jail in Pune has fled, prompting a police manhunt. The escaped prisoner, identified as Atmaram alias Atma Ladkya Bhawar, is a native of Palghar district. In 2009, Bhawar committed murder in Devipada village, leading to a case being registered against him at Shahapur Police Station. The court sentenced him to life imprisonment and imposed a fine of Rs 2,000, with an additional six-month imprisonment if the fine was not paid. Bhawar was initially kept in Yerawada Central Jail.

Due to his good behavior, Bhawar was transferred to the open jail by the Yerawada Jail Administration, where prisoners engage in farming activities. Bhawar was present in the open prison throughout Saturday, 13th July. However, around 5 pm, guard Tausif Sayyad noticed Bhawar was missing during a count. Despite a thorough search by the prison guards, he was not found. Following this, Hemant Patil, an officer at Yerawada jail, filed a complaint at Yerawada Police Station. A search is ongoing for Bhawar, and Police Constable Jadhav is investigating the case.
