Pashan, 12th July 2024: The Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demolished 90,000 square feet of unauthorized furniture showrooms, hotels, and sheds on the Katraj-Dehuroad bypass. This latest operation, aimed at clearing encroachments, raises questions about the long-term effectiveness of such actions as encroachments often reappear shortly after demolition.

The building development department of the PMC spearheaded the demolition. The operation focused on the east side of the bypass on Friday, targeting 11 unauthorized showrooms and hotels situated in the restricted area of the Defence Ministry’s High Energy Materials Research Laboratory (HEMRL). HEMRL had lodged continuous complaints about these encroachments.

However, seven property owners secured a stay from the court, preventing action against their premises. Despite this, the municipal team proceeded with demolishing other unauthorized structures, utilizing jaw cutter machines, two JCBs, gas cutters, and breakers.

This demolition follows earlier actions taken on the west side of the road, indicating an ongoing effort by the PMC to address unauthorized constructions in the area. The persistent issue of re-encroachment, however, casts doubt on the lasting impact of these measures.
